      Message from the Board
      -----------------------

Vision 20/20, ACGIH's strategic plan, is driving regeneration and transforma-
tion on many fronts. The result of countless hours of investigation and evalua-
tion by the predecessors to the current Board of Directors, Vision 20/20
addresses critical issues necessary to ensure the continued success of ACGIH
as an international leader in the development and dissemination of technical
information.

One prominent goal of Vision 20/20 to design and operate an ACGIH education
program is receiving concentrated attention. The development of educational
workshops and symposia for occupational and environmental professionals began
with the first Applied Workshop in February 1997; the focus was bioaerosols in
the healthcare, agricultural, and indoor air environments. In September, a
symposium on Harmonization of Workplace Guidelines was organized by Drs. John
Doull, Calvin Willhite, and Michael Morgan at the International Occupational
Health Association Meeting in Crans Montana, Switzerland. Many representatives
from the international occupational hygiene community contributed to the
symposium.

These are just two examples of the educational programming ACGIH intends to
undertake in the months ahead. Staff and volunteers from the technical
committees and the membership are working together to organize various courses,
symposia, and workshops that meet the needs of today's practitioners.

In 1998, ACGIH will sponsor a number of new educational ventures. The second
Applied Workshop will be held February 23-25 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
The workshop will concentrate on critical issues in "Occupational and Environ-
mental Exposure Assessment"; topics will include real-time instrumentation, gas
and vapor methods, aerosol methods, and assessment strategies. The workshop's
goal is to set a direction for progress over the next decade.

On March 6, the Chemical Substances TLV Committee and the German MAK
Commission will sponsor a one-day symposium on "Developing Occupational
Exposure Limits from Toxicology and Epidemiology Studies." The focus will be on
carbon black, diesel exhaust, and asphalt fume. This special symposium will
immediately follow the Society of Toxicology's Annual Conference in Seattle.

Other courses, symposiums, and workshops are being planned by several of ACGIH's
technical committees and various members. The BEI, Physical Agents, Infectious
Agents, Computer, and Bioaerosols Committees all have events in the works. As
soon as plans are finalized, members will be notified in this newsletter so they
can take advantage of the educational opportunities offered.

ACGIH members Jeff Burton and Don Wasserman will teach courses at headquarters
in April. Burton will direct his "Special Topics in Industrial Ventilation," and
Wasserman will present the "Ergonomic Issues of Occupational Vibration."

The Board of Directors is committed to fulfilling the purposes and goals of
Vision 20/20. The educational opportunities being developed and provided by
ACGIH underscore our commitment to the profession and our determination to bring
the best information available to practitioners throughout the world.
