Environmental Project Database Available on World Wide Web

The World Wide Web now offers a Database of environmentally benefit-
cial projects undertaken by defendants in enforcement actions as part
of their settlements.
The National Database of Supplemental Environmental Projects,
which features about 318 projects in cludeded enforcement settlements
for fiscal years 1994-l996, contains in formation about statutory viola-
tions, project descriptions, estimated costs and anticipated environmen-
tal impacts.
A defendant is not required to perform such a project. But in re-
turn for doing so, a portion of the project's cost becomes a factor in
determining the penalty. These projects also can result in improve-
ments to the environment that might otherwise not occur.

Page also includes policy and guidance documents, and sample settle-
ment language.
