THR UK branch of the International Stress Management Association (ISMA)
have launched a validation process for providers of stress management
training.
Members of ISMA who attain the status of Validated Stress Management
Trainers are experienced trainers and have appropriate education and
qualifications in stress management. Most have extensive experience
in the provision of this training in industry at all levels. Some have
worked in senior management positions themselves and understand both
the organisational issues and the psycho-social aspects of stress at work.
The criteria are strict and cover not only knowledge and experience
but also method and approach. This safeguards the psychological safety
of trainees and ensures appropriate group management and confidentiality.
Janet Williams, ISMA UK Chair, explained that the first step in the
process was to identify the core content of good stress management
training and last year ISMA mounted a major national forum to debate
and agree this. Invitations to attend the forum were extended to those
working in stress management in both public and private sectors.
This core content forms the base of knowledge on which the trainers
build their courses.
A list of ISMA Validated Stress Management Trainers can be obtained
from the ISMA Secretary Karin Maule, Heron House, 5 Heron Square,
Richmond, Surrey TW9 lEL;

The Association believes this initiative will be welcomed by personnel
and training managers who may have had unfortunate experiences of past
trainers and consultants.
* One of this year's RoSPA Congress sessions (13 May, 9.00am-11.00am)
looks at stress as an occupational issue, draws lessons from recent
common law cases and suggests practical steps employers can take to
reduce stress.
