The EPA denied Ohio's request to reclassift the Cincinnati area as
an "attainment" area for meeting federal smog (ozone) standards.
According to the EPA, the area does not meet those standards. The Cin-
cinnati area includes seven counties, four of which are in Ohio and
three of which are in Kentucky
In May l995, Ohio asked the EPA to upgrade Hamilton, Butler, Warren
and Clermont Counties to ozone attainment status. Two months later, the
area violated the ozone standard. In September l996, the EPA denied
Kentucky's request to upgrade Boone, Campbell and Kenton counties to
ozone attainment status.
The EPA action comes despite praise from the agency for the Cincinnati
community's implementation of a smog alert program. As part of the
program, citizens, businesses and industries take voluntary steps to
reduce emissions when air quality starts to deteriorate.
"While the Cincinnati area is making continual progress toward cutting
ozone levels, more remains to be done," stys Michelle Jordan, deputy
administrator of the EPA's Region 5. "EPA looks forward to working with
the Cincinnati community to address this important public-health
problem."
