======================================================
OSHA plans to use regional conferences to spotlight ways to
combat widespread ergonomic problems.
Gregory Watchman, deputy assistant secretary oflabor for OSHA,
calls such repetitive stress disorders "the largest group of preventable
job injuries and illnesses." Watchman had served as OSHA chief.
Labor Secretary Alexis Herman on Now. 12 swore in Charles
Jeffress as the agency's new assistant secretary of labor.
The first ergonomic conferences were held in Lockport, N.Y., and
Chicago.
Margaret Menge, the National Association of Manufacturers' OSHA
lobbyist, calls the meetings "a taxpayer-funded campaign for an ergo-
nomics standard." Menge points to a big gap between company pro-
grams to curb ergonomic disorders and "a one-size-fits-all ergonomic
regulation."
On the other hand, Larkie Gildersleeve, reasrch and techonology
directer for The Newspaper Guild, says the sessions seek input from
anyone, includeing employers. Guidersleeve adds, " I'm more optimistic...
that there will be an ergonomics standrd."
