Federal mine-safety officials are looking hard at asteep risein noncoal
mining fatalities this year.
While coal-mining deaths have continued to decline, 32 workers in metal
and other mining industries died through early June of this year. this was
an increse from 18 in 1994, 20 in 1995, and 24 in 1996, the Mine Safety
and Health Administration reported.
"We in MSHA are not sure what's caused the increase, but we are seeing
some indications of patterns in the accident," says Davitt McAteer, assis-
tant secretary of labor for Mine Safety and Health.
But according to Bruce Watzman, vice president safety and health for
the National Mining Association, mining firms see "no common thread" in
the fatalities.
Officials from the has been especially high in crushed stone, sand and
gravel, and gold and silver mining. More than one-third of the deaths were
linked to surface haulage accidents, involving trucks, front-end loaders,
scrapers and other equipment. These operations pose "a major safety threat"
for non-coal mining, MSHA said.
