At the invitation of the European Commission (GDV) and the Irish organizers
of the European Conference on the Integration of Safety and Health into the
Educational System, the ISSA Section for Education and Training in Preven-
tion presented its principles and goals in this field along with selected ex-
amples of safety education for youth.

During the Conference, two hundred participants from twenty countries discussed
the role and place of prevention in school curriculum.

The existence of a clear political will at State level, the conviction and
qualifications of teachers, as well as a profound knowledge of the needs and
expectations of youth in this field on the part of scientists and educators,
are indispensable prerequisites for a successful integration of prevention
into the mental make-up of young folks. In this connexion, numerous
 examples were elaborated.

In his opening address Chairman Ehr-hard recalled that the concepts advanced
by him and adopted by the ISSA General Assembly open up abundant per-
spectives in all countries. Among all these concepts, it is evident that for
the notion of prevention to be successfully disseminated, its focal point must
 be man himself.

Furthermore, prevention must be taught throughout life and begin as early as
possible with the aid of programmes which take account of the intellectual
 maturity of children and adolescents.
Its goal consists of recognizing, evaluating and eliminating or attenuating
risks for oneself and others. This education enables each individual, accor-
ding to his social position and function,to act in a responsible manner for the
 conmmunity.

Education in prevention is a continuous learning process within the family, in
school or during cultural or sporting activities. In this way the young per-
son practises his safe behaviour in controlled surroundings and prepares him-
self for the professional life awaiting him.

In the framework of this European Conference, the award of the prizes of the
3rd International Competition on Didactic Material for Education and Trai-
ning in Safety took place as well. This Competition was carried out in 1996 by
the ISSA Section for Education and Training in Prevention in collaboration
with all the other ISSA Sections and the European Commission, within the con-
text of the European Year "Permanent Education and Training".
