An international conference recently held in Brussels has highlighted
the role of information technology in addressing workplace health and
safety problems. The conference was organized by a leading Belgian health
and safety authoriry, known as ANPAT, and featured dozens of government
and private exhibitors. Experts presented papers on many aspects of infor-
  mation technology.
"The conference was mainly for information providers, but also for
intermediaries such as libraries and for end users such as government
institutions and training providers," says Veronique de Broeck from ANPAT.
The developers of new information technologies believe software such as
CD-ROMs and the availability of information on the internet will make
legal requirements and solutions to workplace health and safety problems
easier to access than existing paper sources, which may be spread through
libraries or government departments. Users will literally have large
amounts of information at their fingertips.
How can employers' trade unions know that information they access is
current and comprehensive? According to de Broeck, health and safety
authorities need to be involved in the planning of information to make
sure it meets user needs. "In Belgium, we are trying to ger a closer link
with software providers to ensure that both technical aspects and
communication and education dimensions are adequate," she says.
Users can be confronted with a huge amount of information when they
search for solutions to workplace problems. This will be a priority of the
newly established Bilbao Agency, a body of the European Commission based
in Spain, says de Broeck. The agency will try to ensure that European-wide
informatron in not duplicated. The Bilbao Agency hopes to have its first
entry on the lnternet this year.
