This March saw the start of JISHA's new "safety behavior survey," which was
developed in order to provide reference materials for workplace safety activi-
ties. The goal is to prevent unsafe behavior through an objective understand-
ing of the tendencies for errors and personality traits of individual employees.
The survey uses a questionnaire to elicit "yes" or "no" answers from individ-
ual employees to 78 questions on daily activities. The results are analyzed by
JISHA and classified into four levels of error tendencies and eight personality
traits that are closely correlated with unsafe behavior, along with comments
based on such levels.
While the findings suggest the kind of errors respondents are likely to make
and pertinent behavioral traits at the time of the survey, no attempt is made
to provide detailed character analysis. Accordingly, it is important to note
that survey results are never intended to pin "unsafe" labels on any worker
or shift responsibility for accidents to perceived behavioral characteristics.
The following three prerequisites must be met before any survey is carried
out.
1.Approval by the manager of the workplace.
2.Participation in the survey has been deliberated and approved by the
workplace safety and health council.
3.Plans for the utilization of the results have been established in advance.
