From 22 to 26 April 1996, Madrid, Spain will be host to the XIVth
World Congress on Occupational Safety and Health. Some 2,000 safety and
health experts, programme leaders and decision - makers from some 90
countries will meet together to discuss key methods and strategies in the
fight against workplace hazards.
As on all previous occasions, this Congress will be sponsored by the
International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Social
Security Association (ISSA) and organized in cooperation with the
leading organizations in the host country. In Madrid, it will be
organized in conjunction with the Spanish Ministry of Health and Social
Security and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health
(Instituto Nacional de Seguridad e Higiene en el Trabajo).
The Congress sessions will be held at the Palacio Municipal de
Congressos, located in the Campo de las Naciones, which is equipped with
all the facilities required for a major event of this type : meeting
halls and break - out rooms with a capacity ranging between 50 and 3,000
persons, highly efficient presentation and communication technology,
restaurants and exhibition areas, all in an attractive architectural
environment. In the breaks between sessions, participants can stretch
their legs in the nearby Juan Carlos I park.
The first day of the Congress (22 April 1996) will commence in a
traditional manner with the opening session followed by the
introductory reports from the organizers.
During the afternoon, there will be a choice of themes between
" Lifelong safety education and training" and " Occupational safety and
health in small and medium - sized undertakings".
During the morning of the second day (23 April 1996), there will first
be a plenary session on the subject of the "Globalization of
international relations : implications for occupational safety and
health". This will be followed by two parallel sessions entitled :
"Safety, organization and competitiveness". and "Occupational safety
and product safety".
That afternoon there will be three parallel sessions, each devoted to
one of the following themes : "Occupational safety integration and
organization in construction", "Safety of machinery : safe workplace,
safe working procedure", and "Work and health : new contributions to
the study and prevention of work - related disorders and diseases".
The third day (24 April 1996) will be devoted in its entirety to the
subject of chemical hazards under the title "Living safely with chemical
risks". In the morning, there will first be a plenary session in which a
general overview will be offered of the subject, and thereafter it will
be possible to choose between the two subjects of "The contribution of
research to the prevention of chemical risks". During the afternoon, two
further aspects of this main theme will be addressed : "Using substance
knowledge to improve safety at work. Using measuring technology to
monitor the workplace" and "Dangers due to hazardous materials in the
construction industry".
The plenary session entitled "Optimizing occupational safety and
health through cooperation" will take place at the beginning of the
(25 April 1996), and will lead into two parallel sessions on
"Cooperation between national institutions" and "Enterpriselevel
programmes". That afternoon, there will once again be a choice, this
time between the subjects of "Control of occupational safety and health
conditions" and " Occupational safety and health in agriculture : today
and in future".
On the morning of the fifth and last day (26 April 1996), parallel
sessions will once again be organized around the subjects of
"Responsibilities for occupational safety and health" and "Health and
safety in the health sector", before a plenary session is held around
midday to bring the Congress to its conclusion.
