ACGIH participates in successful IOHA meeting
    -----------------------------------------------

ACGIH Worldwide, in keeping with its name, played a key role in the successful
recent conference of the International Occupational Hygiene Association (IOHA)
in Crans Montana, Switzerland.

ACGIH sponsored and coordinated a well-received panel presentation on interna-
tional occupational exposure values (OEVs) and their harmonization. (See Today!,
September/ October 1997, pg. 1.) Chemical Substances TLV Committee Chair John
Doull moderated the panel discussion which included representatives of Canada,
Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United
States. In addition to Doull, ACGIH participants included Past CS-TLV Committee
Chair Ernest Mastromatteo, CS-TLV Committee Vice Chair Calvin Willhite, and BEI
Committee Chair Mike Morgan. The evaluations of the ACGIH session were, without
exception, in the "excellent" category.

Over 270 individuals from around the world attended the five-day conference
which was arranged by the Swiss Society of Occupational Hygiene. ACGIH also
staged an exhibit of its technical publications which served as a focal point
during the meeting.

At the transitional meeting of the IOHA Board of Directors, ACGIH member Bob
Herrick stepped down following a successful term as the ACGIH representative;
Herrick served as the 1995-1996 IOHA President. The new ACGIH representative to
IOHA is Past Board Chair Roy Buchan of Colorado State University.Riitta Viinanen
of Finland was installed as the new IOHA President.

A highlight of the conference was the presentation of the first IOHA Outstanding
Achievement Award. The recipient was Jeff Lee, a former ACGIH Chair as well as a
former IOHA President. In his acceptance remarks, Lee challenged IOHA and those
in attendance to plan and work so that the international organization, which was
established in 1987, can reach its full potential as a valuable and meaningful
player in occupational health throughout the world.

ACGIH Chair Gyan Rajhans addressed the assembly during the ACGIH panel
presentation and emphasized ACGIH's commitment to the harmonization of OEVs. He
announced that members of the German MAK Commission would join the TLV
Committee at its meeting in March 1998 in Seattle and would participate in the
Chemical Substances TLV Committee's one-day symposium on "Developing
Occupational Exposure Values From Toxicology and Epidemiology Studies" (see
first story, above).

The next IOHA conference will be in Cairns, Australia, in July 2000 and will be
sponsored by the Australian Occupational Hygiene Association.
