An Atlanta-based poultry processor is facing fines of $1.27 million
for a series of incidents that caused three workers to suffer amputation,
OSHA announced. This was OSHA's l9th investigation of the company, which
produces boneless chicken and chicken parts for the grocery, fastfood and
restaurant industries. The company employs 3,550 workers around the
  country.
The company received 23 alleged willful citations for lockout/tagout
violations at its Macon, Ga., facility. Last year a worker lost part of
a finger while cleaning moving equipment, and in 1995 two other workers
suffered amputations during lockout/tagout-related activities. OSHA also
found three serious violations during the inspection.
Investigators found the company neglected to use proper safety proce-
dures to ensure hazardous machinery was turtred off or "locked" during
repair, maintenance or service work. And the company's managers were aware
of the hazards but failed to respond to employees' concerns about them,
  OSHA says.
