0SHA is investigating a nitrogen-tank explosion that killed eight
workers and injured two in a metal-fabri-cating plant near Houston.
The incident occurred Just three days before Christmas, as the workers
were closing the plant for the holidays.

"The workers were doing maintenance work and trying to open the last
of 16 nitrogen tanks that were supposed to be depressurized," says
Department of Labor spokeswoman Sherrie Moran. "But apparently this tank
hadn't been depressurized, and when they opened the top, some 5,000 pounds
per square inch of pressure" fatally injured them.

0SHA has six months to complete its investigation of the incident.
Moran says the company has been cooperating fully with compliance staff.
The plant was last inspected by OSHA in l994, at which time the previous
owner was cited for a serious violarion of the hazard communicarion
standard and issued a $90O proposed penalty, OSHA says.
