ARSON has become the major cause of fires, a serious threat to life
and costing the country some ￡400 million a year in fire damage and
consequential loss.
A meeting taking place in London on 29th February will consider six
ways in which arson attacks on property and people can be prevented.
The meeting will take the form of a seminar for industrial,
commercial and public sector fire, security and risk managers,together
with the police and fire service officers and insurers who advise them.
It will spell out the nature of the arson threat and the different kinds
of arson motives making up that threat - fraud, vandalism, revenge and
grudge attacks, arson by pressure groups and arson committed by those
with mental problems.
A series of structured workshops will explore the particular problems
involved in six areas, and will seek to present remedial measures to
prevent such attacks. The six areas are :
o Preventing arson attacks on local authority property
o Preventing arson attacks in industrial and commercial premises
o Preventing fraudulent arson
o Getting to grips with the social evils of arson (e.g. as experienced
in inner cities)
o Preventing arson in hospitals
o Preventing arson by those who are mentally ill.
The seminar is arranged by the Arson Prevention Bureau which was set
up in the public interest by the Association of British Insurers and
the Home Office.
