    Heat-Related Illnesses Can Be Serious
    =====================================

    Summer's warmth can become dangerous when the temperature climbs above 90
    degrees F. A comfortable outdoor work and play environment may become a
    sweltering oven. In addition to making us fatigued and uncomfortable,
    unchecked exposure to excessive heat can lead to serious illness and even
    death, according to the National Safety Council.

    Heat disorders can affect anyone who is unaccustomed to hot and humid
    environments from children and the elderly to healthy athletes. There are
    simple steps that everyone can take to avoid heat-related illnesses.

    However, if a heat-related illness strikes, recognizing and responding
    correctly to the situation can be a matter of life and death. The National
    Safety Council?s first aid classes and materials highlight how to respond
    to heat emergencies. Dr. Alton Thygerson, author of the Council?s First
    Aid Handbook, can discuss ways to deal with the heat.

    Safety Council?s News Center at 630-775-2307 or e-mail us at
