     ERGONOMICS UPDATE: OSHA renews its commitment to a standard
     as scientific support surfaces
     ============================================================

     OSHA's efforts to develop an ergonomics standard were boosted by the
     release of a National Academy of Sciences (NAS) report linking back
     injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome and other musculoskeletal disorders
     to work-related activities, such as heavy lifting and repetitive
     motion. The report also provided evidence that reducing biomechanical
     stress on the job lowers the risk of injury.

     "In light of these strong findings by 66 of the nation's leading
     scientists, I hope Congress will reject any further attempts to
     delay the development of a protective standard," said Secretary of
     Labor Alexis M. Herman.

     OSHA hopes to publish its proposal for a national ergonomics standard
     next summer.

     According to an Oct. 6 Wall Street Journal report, The National
     Association of Manufacturers says it opposes "any blanket standard
     until OSHA has credible bipartisan science to move forward."
