The auto and steel industry seeking serious accidents prevention plans MOEL and KOSHA hosted auto and steel industry leadership conference Oct. 10 2013 ○ KOSHA and the Ministry of Employment and Labor hosted on 10 Oct. the Auto and Steel Industry OSH Leadership Conference that aims at preventing serious occupational accidents. ○ Hosted in Daejoen-si, the conference was attended by OSH leaders of 5 carmakers and 5 steelmakers, president of KOSHA, and officials from the MOEL. ○ The conference covered companies’ OSH activities and government’s policy against serious occupational accidents, after a series of such accidents like hydrofluoric acid leak, explosion, fire, suffocation, water tank explosion, and flood. ○ The MOEL explained a comprehensive anti-serious occupational accidents plan and its plan for more strict enforcement of the OSH act. Companies discussed comprehensive OSH plans for both principal employers and contractors, how to address a widespread false sense of safety among employers and employees, and counter-accident plans. A resolution was adopted after the conference to show participants’ commitment to accident prevention. ○ “Recent serious accidents could have been prevented if basic rules and regulations had been followed,” Baek Hun-ki, president of KOSHA, said. “Companies’ leadership teams need to have a strong commitment to accident prevention and workplace safety.”
